Maize has embarked on reimagining the look and feel of
Academy Avenue. The intent is to create a vibrant and walkable
district focused on creativity and arts. The idea for this area
was envisioned in the
Academy Arts District Plan and the
in Motion Plan.
The Academy Avenue project will create an identity that
represents the Maize community and instills civic pride. The
design will celebrate community, family, creativity, and
diversity. Academy Avenue will be a place to gather, shop, play,
The Academy Avenue improvements will extend from Maize Road
on the east to Cathey St on the west. The project spans a
diverse area that includes a variety of land uses. The east end
from Maize Road to Queen Avenue is all single-family residences.
Continuing east, the uses between Queen Avenue and Park Avenue
include residences and places of worship. The area from Park
Avenue and Khedive Street is a growing small business hub with
converted residences serving as shops. The west end from Khedive
Street to Cathey Street are civic and institutional uses
including Maize Central Elementary School, City Park, Community
Building, and the Clair Donnelly
The design includes unique features for each individual area
to ensure the public realm works in coordination with the
adjacent land uses.
Through the integration of its population into every aspect of quality education, civic improvements, community appearance, commerce and recreation, Maize shall preserve its small town atmosphere and become the best small city in Kansas.
